Police Motorcyclist Receives £370,000 After Collision

A police sergeant who was involved in a motorcycle accident, which left him with impaired mobility and ended his career, has been awarded £370,000 in compensation.

Steve Ball was on patrol on his motorcycle when a motorcyclist travelling in the opposite direction lost control of his bike. The oncoming bike veered into Mr Ball’s path, causing a head-on collision.

Mr Ball was thrown from his bike and suffered serious injuries, including damage to his neck, shoulder and the nerves in his arm. The accident left him with no movement on the right side of his body. He underwent surgery on four occasions, including an operation in which nerves from his legs were transplanted to his shoulder.

Following treatment, he has regained some movement on his right side. However, he cannot move his wrist and has limited motion in his fingers and shoulder. He also suffers from severe pain. The seriousness of his injuries compelled him to take early retirement from the police force.

Mr Ball commenced a personal injury claim against the insurers of the other motorcyclist. In an out-of-court settlement, damages of £370,000 were agreed.
