Naturalisation Applications and Applying for British Citizenship

There are several ways to become a British citizen, and the most common method is through a process call ‘naturalisation’.

Our team of immigration solicitors specialise in naturalisation applications and applying for British citizenship. We have been helping people through this process for decades and know exactly what’s needed to avoid common pitfalls and complete the process quickly, saving you time, money and stress.

What is naturalisation?

In simple terms, naturalisation is the legal process allowing non-citizens of a country to obtain citizenship. This means by completing your British naturalisation application you will become a British citizen, gaining all the benefits which come with that.

British citizenship application requirements

You become eligible to apply for citizenship upon meeting the following minimum requirements:

  • You are at least 18 years old
  • You have lived in the UK for five years with an absence no longer than 450 days during that time and no longer than 90 days in the last year. If your spouse is a British citizen, you become eligible to apply after living in the UK for three years
  • You have been granted indefinite leave to remain (or permanent residence for EEA nationals) for at least 12 months
  • You are deemed to be of good character. Typically, this means you have not committed any serious crimes or UK immigration offences
  • You intend to remain in the UK or work for the British government or British corporation following receipt of citizenship
  • You have passed the ‘Life in the UK’ test
  • You meet the minimum required standard for communicating in English.

Before commencing your application, we will ensure you meet all these requirements to minimise the possibility of unforeseen surprises emerging during the process.

In addition, we can help you prepare for the ‘Life in the UK’ test, giving you the best-possible chance of passing it at the first attempt.

What’s the citizenship application process?

Applications for British citizenship can only be made by post and must include all relevant documentation, including the application form completed by you and our referees. We ensure all documentation is included before submitting the application and assist with completing all forms.

Once all of this has been completed it is sent to the Home Office, who take the time to review all forms alongside checking your UK visa status criminal record and looking for other civil matters which may render you ineligible.

You will also be required to provide biometric information as part of the process, typically comprising of fingerprints and a photo.

Assuming your application is successful, you will be invited to attend a citizenship ceremony, where will receive a Certificate of Naturalisation and officially become a legally recognised British citizen. Following this, you will also be eligible to apply for a British passport.

How long does the process take?

An application for British citizenship is a large, complex process which takes a lot of work to get through. This means receiving a decision on your naturalisation application from the Home Office can take six months or longer, making ensuring a correct submission is made first time vital.

Applying for a British passport

A British passport allows you to travel to over 173 countries without requiring a visa, whilst also being the simplest method of proving citizenship to employers, letting agents and all other situations which require this. We highly recommend applying for one as soon as possible.

The application process typically takes around six weeks, though we can arrange fast-track one week and one day applications if required. You will be required to fill out an application form and provide the original copy of your naturalisation certificate plus two identical photographs.

Once issued, your passport will be valid for ten years.
